RIVER SWEEP
Rutherford Outdoor Coalition sponsors an annual Broad River clean up day on the last Saturday in September. Multiple crews of volunteers hit as much of the river as we can between Lake Lure and Cleveland County.
Partners in the past for this adventure have included North State Gas, Duke Power, local Boy Scout troops and Rutherford County Solid Waste.
The effort is part of a statewide effort called Big Sweep. Their website is here. There you can see the amount of trash pulled out of waterways and costal areas statewide.
In 2007, the ROC sponosored River Sweep pulled 68 tires and total of over 4,000 pounds of trash. There were 57 volunteers in the river.
The truly exciting part of this effort is that regular volunteers tell us that the they are now seeing the river get cleaner every year because of our efforts!
